Autotask Week in IT: Making Choices: The Cloud Boom & Deciding Between Big Data and IoT

November 13, 2015

Here’s a look at what’s happening this week in the world of ITSPs, MSPs and Enterprise IT departments.

DataInformed: You Don’t Have to Choose Between ‘Big Data’ and ‘IoT’
By Puneet Suppal

If I had a dime for every time I have been asked by an IT person whether she or he should embark on a big data initiative or on an Internet of Things (IoT) one at their company, I might be able to have just about enough to start a new business with personal funds. For too long, IT managers and executives have pondered their digital future in the light of all the hype surrounding big data and getting the right IoT solutions. Faced with finite budgets and resources, they wonder if going in one direction or the other is more advantageous for them.

CloudTech: Choosing your cloud: The good, the bad, and the ugly
By David Barker

The biggest challenge any business faces is trying to predict the future; knowing what your data will look like in three or five years’ time so you can put in an infrastructure that is flexible enough to grow and accommodate change is a huge challenge. The amount of data that all businesses are generating themselves and storing on their clients is growing all the time. The infamous statistic from 2013 that 90% of the world’s data has been generated over the last two years continues to be quoted and I suspect if we looked closer now in 2015 we’d find the numbers astounding.

CIO: Need for cyber-insurance heats up, but the market remains immature
By Clint Boulton

Spurred by the rash of high-profile hacks, companies are purchasing cyber-insurance to protect themselves from the financial liability associated with data loss and business disruption. But the still-maturing market for cyber-insurance remains fraught with loopholes and inconsistencies, and suffers from a shortage of qualified staff who can properly assess cybersecurity profiles, experts and CIOs say. "The application process is less than what you would think it would be, in terms of the due diligence," says Shawn Wiora, CIO and CISO of Creative Solutions in Healthcare, a nursing care facility provider.

Channelinsider: Gear Up for a Cloud Boom
By Gina Roos

Global cloud traffic will more than quadruple by the end of 2019, outpacing the growth of global data center traffic, which is forecast to triple over the same time period, according to Cisco's Global Cloud Index (2014-2019). What's driving the transition to cloud services? Just about everything—personal cloud demands, public cloud services and virtualization in private clouds. Cisco also believes increased machine-to-machine (M2M) connections have the potential to drive even greater cloud traffic.

PC World: How big data is changing the database landscape for good
By Katherine Noyes

Mention the word "database," and most people think of the venerable RDBMS that has dominated the landscape for more than 30 years. That, however, may soon change. A whole crop of new contenders are now vying for a piece of this key enterprise market, and while their approaches are diverse, most share one thing in common: a razor-sharp focus on big data. Much of what's driving this new proliferation of alternatives is what's commonly referred to as the "three V's" underlying big data: volume, velocity and variety.
